Once the structure is extended we reface the cabinets in order to hide any seams and structural changes so they are essentially brand new taller cabinets with new doors.

Remove molding or trim along the top of the cabinets.
If you have less space you can just add the header and close the whole thing up.
This will give you something to nail your front panel piece into cut 4 8 sheet of mdf to width and use for front panel piece.

If you have a large space above your cabinets like us i recommend making them additional upper or open cabinets.
Covering the space with plywood.
Glue and nail to the side walls for upper support making sure they would be level to keep the extension face plate level with existing cabinets.
You might remember awhile back i scribbled out a little sketch of what i wanted my someday kitchen to look like.
The cleats will be what will support the extension faceplate.

Install wood cleats into ceiling.

Next i installed the front face frame along with the side of the upper cabinet.
Later i realized i should have made the sides of the frame go to the ceiling so that the crown molding would have something to attach to.
